Dan Shorten
Dan is an award-winning multimedia designer and consultant. He is a digital specialist with experience across a range of platforms and media including 3D design, projection mapping, interactive art, VR, AR and XR. He is an educator with 18 years’ experience teaching in HE and developing innovative and ambitious programmes such as the Video Design for Live Performance BA (Hons) at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Dan is a passionate advocate of new and emerging technologies and developing and nurturing early career artists, engineers, and technologists.
He now works primarily for Guildhall as the Creative Director of Guildhall Live Events, a department of the Guildhall School that specialise in creating immersive and interactive digital experiences. Guildhall Live Event's work covers a range of disciplines, but often includes producing high quality digital artworks, designing and building temporary structures and large-scale sculptures, or creating scenic intervention and using these physical environments to display digital light and sound art.
Dan's work focuses predominately on mixed media, immersive digital environments, and projection. With over 20 years’ experience, both as freelance artist and in his role with Guildhall Live Events, he has designed several large-scale outdoor artworks including installations at Lumiere (UK), Lux (Finland), Glow (Italy), Love Light (UK), Glastonbury (UK), CSU Arts (USA) and BIPAF (South Korea).
His work has also been commissioned by clients such as The Rothschild Foundation, Tower Bridge London, The Tower of London, The Museum of London, The British Museum, Pump House Gallery, Truefest, The Barbican Centre, Gravity Fields, Guildhall Art Gallery, Love Light, Blackpool Illuminations, The Culture Capital Exchange, Lightpool Festival, Being Human Festival and Inside Out Festival.
He also worked on Light Odyssey, a video mapping show with a live orchestral performance from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra that was awarded 5th place at the prestigious Darc Event of the Year Award’s 2019.
